Original Public School Classes

The staff of the original Public School in Lochwinnoch

Classes numbered 40

Mr John Millar came to Lochwinnoch in 1855 as assistant to Mr Andrew Neil. On the retirement of Mr Neil in 1857 John Millar was appointed headmaster, a role he retained for 50 years. At that time the school comprised what was now the lower flat of his house.

On the 24th May 1901 a gathering of over 200 former pupils met to present Mr Millar with a gold watch and a purse containing 100 sovereigns in recognition of his long service. His wife was presented with a silver salver.
Over the years attendance at the school had grown and in 1901 stood at 315 pupils.

He trained at Shawlands Academy (by a strange coincidence where I currently play badminton) where his brother was schoolmaster and he qualified as a teacher from the Church of Scotland Training Collage. Mr Millar retired on 31st Dec 1907. He was the first headmaster of the new Public School - the Big School.

Classes numbered 559

Mr Millar was born in Blantyre on 23rd Dec 1835. He was an elder and Session Clerk of the Parish Church for over 40 years. He lived at Newton of Barr where he died in June 1913 aged 78.

Miss Bryson with a class of very well turned out young ladies. The majority of these photographs were taken at the front door of the original public school building which eventually became part of Struthers Lemonade factory.
