Lochwinnoch through the Ages
BARYTES PROCESSING PLANT AT MUIRSHIEL
The processing plant was located adjacent to the collapsed bridge just beyond the Muirshiel Visitor Center. The last few remnants of the plant can be seem on the RHS of the "After" view. This view is looking down the valley with the Calder on the left. In the "Before" image on the LHS, just below the leaves on the tree, can be seen the railings of the original bridge.
The image below is the collapsed bridge in its hey day. This image was taken from the river bank at the side of the factory and the railings identified in the previous image are clearly visible against the skyline. The barytes mine itself was several miles further up the valley. A short article and video can be found here
