Joseph Johnstone
A regal pose of Mr Joseph Johnstone.
He was active in the local community and war efforts and in July 1918, was awarded the OBE for services to the Scottish War Aims Committee in the King’s Birthday Honours list. Also in 1918 he was elected as Coalition Liberal MP for Renfrewshire East. In 1882 he married Jane Clerk, the daughter of Alexander Muir of Beith and they had two sons and four daughters. Johnstone was widowed in 1917 and did not re-marry. He died in 1931 and the company was taken over by his 2 sons and a daughter.

William Johnstone
Known as Wull in the Scots parlance he was Joseph Johnstone's eldest son and third child.

Children of Joseph Johnstone
From the top, Nettie, Catherine 24th Feb 1886-20th Sept 1953, William (Wull) 27th Jul 1893-11th Jan 1952, Janet 1st Oct 1884-10th Nov 1937, Margaret 1897-1986 and Howard 8th Aug 1895-7th Sept 1968. He had two other sons who died from diphtheria, James (2) and Alexander (5) and a third son who died in infancy, Robert (11mths). He also had a daughter Jane Clerk Muir who died in 1892 aged 2.
Nettie's name is missing from the family memorial in Lochwinnoch cemetery. I do not know why.
The memorial was substantially refurbished sometime between 2016 and 2024 with the children of William Johnstone added. William married Mary Love the eldest daughter of James Love the founder of Love's joinery business. They had two sons Joseph Robert Alexander (known as Alistair in the family) and Alan. Alistair was a graduate engineer who emigrated to Australia and Alan became a farmer near Oban.

William Johnstone striking a James Dean pose with motorbike and cigarette. He married Mary the eldest daughter of James Love the founder of Love's Joinery business.

James Dean
Having made a reference to James Dean in the last photograph thought I should say a wee bit about him. James Dean died in 1955 at the age of 24 in a car crash. He made three movies which made him a legend. His untimely death added to that legend. His movies were East of Eden, Rebel Without A Cause and Giant, the latter two were released posthumously. Being photographed on a motorcycle was a classic James Dean pose.
