WILLIAM CRAWFORD was born 1796 in Beith, Ayr, Scotland, and died Dec 18, 1881 in Lochwinnoch, Scotland. He married (1) MARGARET RONALD Jan 09, 1835.  She was born 1817 in Beith, Ayshire, and died Jun 07, 1842 in Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire, Scotland.  He married (2) AGNES ORR Dec 13, 1845 in Lochwinnoch, Scotland, daughter of WILLIAM ORR and JANET BRODIE.  She was born 1809 in Lochwinnoch, Scotland, and died Apr 09, 1891 in Lochwinnoch, Scotland.

Child of WILLIAM CRAWFORD and MARGARET RONALD is:

1. MARY CRAWFORD, b. 1835; m. WILLIAM WRIGHT, Jun 11, 1862, Lochwinnoch, Scotland. WILLIAM WRIGHT: Son of Samuel WRIGHT (an Engineer's manager) and Ann NODDEN. MARY CRAWFORD and WILLIAM WRIGHT married at 111 Calder Street, Lochwinnoch.

1. WILLIAM CRAWFORD, b. Oct 30, 1846; d. Feb 12, 1880. Buried in Auld Simon churchyard with mother, father and brother in law James Hepburn.

3. JESSIE BRODIE CRAWFORD, b. Feb 19, 1849, Lochwinnoch, Scotland; d. Apr 20, 1941, Lochwinnoch, Scotland.

William was a wool mill owner at Calder Glen. He was in partnership with his older brother John. According to JT Hepburn he was from Ayrshire and began his working life as an apprentice. He is buried in Auld Simon churchyard Lochwinnoch

Margaret Ronald died at Lochwinnoch, 7 June 1842, in her 25^th year.

The 1841 census of Lochwinnoch has the family listed on Calder Street, William at age 45, Margaret 30 and Mary 6.

JOHN CRAWFORD was born 1791. He married JANET GILLES.  She was born in Beith, Ayrshire. Janet Crawford is shown in the 1851 Census on Calder Street Lochwinnoch with her niece Mary (17) and her nephew William Gilles, 18, born in Beith, Ayrshire. It is only supposed that her maiden name was Gilles. Janet, 60, is listed as the Head and as an annuitant. It is assumed therefore that her husband John had died sometime since the last census.

JESSIE BRODIE CRAWFORD was born Feb 19, 1849 in Lochwinnoch, Scotland, and died Apr 20, 1941 in Lochwinnoch, Scotland. She married JAMES HEPBURN Aug 01, 1871 in Lochwinnoch, Scotland, son of JAMES HEPBURN and JANE PENNIE.  He was born 1842 in Biggar, Lanark, and died Jan 26, 1894 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Jessie Brodie Hepburn (nee Crawford) the wife of James Hepburn of Biggar and Glasgow, was born at Lochwinnoch in 1849. Her mother, William Crawford's second wife, Agnes Orr of Kaim, and the younger of two of a Crawford family. William Crawford Jr., her brother had died unmarried in 1880. Jessie married James Hepburn at Lochwinnoch when 22 years old in 1871. After the death of her husband in Glasgow in 1894 the grain business was sold and she moved with daughter Addie to the Crawford house at Lochwinnoch and twenty-two years later, the old house of eight rooms was sold to the Lochwinnoch Gas Co.. They moved to a cottage at Johnshill (Sunnyside) which belonged to a cousin, an Orr of Kaim, (later to the Dickie family) and she died there in 1941.

William Crawford, had one daughter from his first marriage, namely Mary Crawford, who married a Mr Wright of Manchester who had been a clerk in the wool mill of the Crawford's at Lochwinnoch. After the wedding they moved to Manchester and their descendants are mostly still there.  We have lost touch with them principally because Crawford property and belongings was left to my mother. My mother was Jessie Brodie, Willaims daughter from his second marriage.

James Hepburn, was born at Biggar in 1842, educated at a Biggar school and served an apprenticeship as a salesman in a dry-goods store in Biggar. Next door to this store was a hardware shop run by a Mr. Gladstone, a second cousin of the William Edward Gladstone who later was the Prime Minister of England in London. James Hepburn later worked at the same trade in Lesmahagow and Glasgow. In Glasgow he was with a large company in Argyle St. named Mann, Buyers & Co. Ltd. for several years and in a neighbouring office met William Crawford Jr. of Lochwinnoch. He was invited to visit the Crawford family there quite a few times. They were the owners of the Crawford Wool Mills of Lochwinnoch. There, he met and married Jessie Crawford (sister of William Crawford Jr.) at Lochwinnoch in 1871. They lived in Biggar near the Hepburn's shop and had two children, Agnes Jane Crawford Hepburn (called Adie) and James Thomas Orr Hepburn. Then went to Biggar schools until James was ten and Addie was 13, then they moved to Crosshill, Glasgow in 1885, a suburb near the lovely Queen's Park. They had a flat at 20 Dixon Avenue, off Victoria road, then moved to 10 Carrington St., at the west end of the city (off Great Western Rd.) in 1887 to be near a grain store James Hepburn had opened in St. George Rd. near St. George Cross, which was carried on until he died in 1894, when 51 years of age. Then Jessie and Adie moved to the old Crawford house at Lochwinnoch which had been left to her on Grandma Crawford's death in 1891. James Hepburn was buried at the old Lochwinnoch graveyard at the foot of Johnshill Road, beside the ruins of the ancient church of the village, a relic of reformation days.

2. AGNES JANE CRAWFORD HEPBURN, b. 29^th June 1872, Biggar, Scotland; d. 1961, Paisley, Scotland. Agnes (Addie) Jane Crawford Hepburn, educated at Miss Ramsay's School at Biggar and Hutchison's Girls School in Glasgow, never married and died at Paisley after a long life in Glasgow and Lochwinnoch, many years with her mother. In Lochwinnoch Addie lived at the Mill Brae, the Crawford family home on Calder Street and later at Sunnyside Cottage Johnshill which belonged to the Orr family.

4th Generation

JAMES THOMAS ORR HEPBURN was born 19^th May, 1875 in Biggar, Lanarkshire, Scotland, and died 1967 in Vancouver, B.C.. He married MARGARET MCLEAN SMITH 14^th April, 1911 in Nanaimo, B.C., daughter of NEIL SMITH and AGNES NELSON.  She was born 24^th Oct, 1880 in Mossend, West Calder, Edinburgh, Scotland, and died Aug 18, 1965 in Vancouver, B.C., Canada.

James Thomas Orr Hepburn, educated at Hutchison's Boys School and Allan Glen's Technical School, Glasgow and graduated in 1890. He served a five-year apprenticeship at Watson, Laidlaw & Co's engineering works in Glasgow. Then was twelve years as draughtsman and designer in mechanical engineering work (including latterly, motor car design) in various companies in Glasgow and Coventry. Was a partner for two years in Abbot Engineering Co of Paisley, which was financed by a second cousin, R.B. Dickie of Troon. Sold out share in the Abbot Eng. Co. in 1809 and emigrated to Canada. Worked about 17 years as Chief Engineer to Nanaimo & South Wellington Coal Company with a two-year period for a change of occupation to fruit growing in Keating Sannich, near Victoria.  Then 18 years as Designing Engineer and Chief Draughtsman for bridges and structures work with the Public Works Department of the B.C. Government at the Parliament Building, Victoria. Retired at 70 on a civil service pension in 1945 to Parksville, Vancouver Island, and later when 80 years old moved to Victoria, then to North Surrey B.C. in 1959, to be beside his daughter Nancy Vincent. He married, Margaret McLean Smith of Nanaimo in 1911. She had emigrated to B.C. with her family in 1910 from Shettleston, near Glasgow and was the second daughter of Neil McLean Smith who was born at Huntsfield Farm, Biggar in 1854 and died in Nanaimo in 1925.

5th Generation

JAMES THOMAS HEPBURN was born 12^th Mar, 1912, died 1973. He married MOLLY MOYER 18^th Oct, 1941 in Anglican Church, Victoria, British Columbia. 

James Thomas Hepburn, born in Nanaimo, B.C., eldest son of James T.O. and Margaret Hepburn, educated at a Nanaimo school, then at Cedar District School till 1927 when the family moved to Victoria. He graduated from Victoria High School in 1929 and worked as a draughtsman for a patent agent in Victoria till 1932, when he started work as a radio technician with Island Tug and Barge Co. of Victoria till 1940. He married Molly Moyer, the secretary for the Island Tug & Barge Co., in 1941. He became a partner in the Spillsbury & Hepburn Radio Co. of Vancouver in 1941, which developed into the Queen Charlotte Air Lines in 1944. They then sold out to the Pacific Western Air Lines in 1957. James became the manager of the Radio Telecommunications Council of B.C. and owner of rental property in apartment blocks in Vancouver and a country cottage and acreage at Matsqui which was the headquarters of his radio work. They had two of a family, James Peter Hepburn, born 1943, a college student of the U.B.C. of Vancouver and a future electrical engineer in spaceships probably. Mary Jean Hepburn, born 1946, and in 1962 at the high school in Vancouver.

AGNES NELSON CRAWFORD HEPBURN married FREDRICK VINCENT 1^st Jun, 1946 in Parksville, BC. He was born 1904, and died 1981.

Agnes Nelson Crawford Vincent born in Nanaimo B.C. educated at Nanaimo, Cedar District and Victoria schools and a graduate of Oak Bay High School Victoria in 1931. Married Frederic Vincent of Saskatchewan, at Parksville on 1^st Jul, 1946 after several years working during the war in an airplane factory in Vancouver and assistant nurse at the Vancouver General Hospital later. Had three children who were born at Bralorne, B.C. where their father worked in the gold mines. Douglas S. born in 1947, Margaret and Irene (twins) born in 1948. Moved to Surrey, B.C. (near New Westminster) in 1950, where the family went to school. Frederic Vincent was born at Earl Grey, Saskatchewan in 1904 and was in the Canadian Air Force during the Second World War.

NELSON SMITH HEPBURN married JOSEPHINE COOK 1^st Jun, 1940. 

Nelson Smith Hepburn, born in Nanaimo and educated at Cedar District and Oak Bay High School in Victoria. Trained as a mechanic and wood turner in Victoria till 2nd World War. He joined the Volunteer Branch of the 9th Coastal Battery, R.C.A. in 1937 and was transferred to the Canadian Army in 1939, at the end of the war in 1945, retired as Lieutenant. Was married to Josephine Cook of Victoria on 1^st Jun 1943.  Attended Vancouver University, 1946 to 1950 and graduated as BSc in Civil Engineering and was appointed a member of the Professional Engineers Association of B.C. in 1953. He was a draughtsman with the Highway Department in the Parliament Buildings, Victoria, 1952-1956 and a partner in A.B. Sanderson Co. Consulting Engineers for bridges and structural work from 1957 to date. 

They had three of a family, Roberta L. Hepburn, born 1941 a college student at U.B.C. in 1962 and in the summer, an expert caterer at the Banff Springs Hotel, Malcolm Bruce Hepburn, born 1945, a future worker in protons and radioactive isotopes and Catherine Anne Hepburn, born 1956 and in 1962 just starting school in Vancouver, the youngest and liveliest of her generation and has more electrical energy than her namesake in the theatrical line.

JESSIE CRAWFORD HEPBURN was born in Cedar Creek, BC.  She married JOHN ELLIOTT WILLIAMS 4^th Apr, 1942 in Victoria, B.C., son of ROBERT WILLIAMS and ANNA MARSHALL. He was born 11^th Oct, 1916 in Ormond, Ontario, and died Nov 22, 1991 in Brockville, Ontario.

Jessie Crawford Williams (nee Hepburn) was educated in Victoria and graduated from Oak Bay High School Victoria in 1940 and from St. Margaret's Business School in 1941. Served one year as teller on the staff of the Fort Street Branch of the Royal Bank of Canada in Victoria.  Married John E. Williams, an engineer in a Corvette of the Canadian Navy, serving in the Second World War, on 4^th Apr 1942 at Victoria B.C. They moved to Ontario about Sept 1945 and to London Ontario in 1950 where John was a power plant engineer in the General Motors diesel Co. Ltd. making diesel locomotives. From 1961 was Superintendent of Malton Airport on the staff of the Canadian Government Department of Transport at Toronto.

They had four boys, John Patrick, born 23^rd Apr 1943 in Victoria, and in 1961 at high school in Toronto and a boy to be proud of as he has ability.  Robert Nelson, b. 1948 (the survivor of twins) and a lively Williams.  David Elliott, b. 1950, the strong one of the family and Thomas Marshall, b. 1952, going to be the tall one of the family (maybe). All except John were born in Ontario but the family should someday come to B.C. for a better climate!
