Crawford Family of Calder Glen Woollen Mill

The Calder Glen Mill was one of the longest lasting enterprises in Lochwinnoch. It went through various manifestations during its long life. It outlasted all the cotton mills bar one and also the extensive furniture trade that replaced the cotton mills. Initially the operation shared premises with a state of the corn mill. Overtime the corn mill ceased operation, the woollen business expanded and further buildings were added. William Crawford who started the woollen business sold out to his partner who transitioned the site to become a laundry. Subsequently, it was taken over by a Mr Whitton who returned the site to its roots, the manufacture of woollen products.

David Williams a descendant of William Crawford contacted me and provided me with a comprehensive amount of information about the family during their ownership of the mill and after they relinquished ownership. Their story is an integral part of the history of Lochwinnoch and it is recorded in the series of article below.
